Lest we think that pork is simply a problem at the Federal level, Aaron at Bluegrass Policy Blog reminds us that waste can be found in our state capitols, as well.
Aaron documents several hundred million dollars in pork he's found in the Kentucky state budget, including:
$75-million for a government-owned sports arena in Louisville
$68-million in improvements for state parks (Kentucky has more state parks than any other state)
$25-million for a hotel for the Kentucky Horse Park (in breathless anticipation of the 2010 Equestrian Games)
$2-million for an expo center in Hopkins County
$1.5-million for an expo center in Casey County
$1.7-million for the Kentucky Railway Museum
$1.7-million for the Battle of Richmond Association
OK, so it isn't all bad: I heartily approve of the following line item, which clearly is not pork, but is rather a much-needed and urgent spending requirement:
$6-million for a polar bear exhibit at the Louisville Zoo
Hey, we all have our biases, what can I say?
At any rate: Aaron is campaigning to get Governor Ernie Fletcher to "use the pen" and veto the bloated budget. Drop by his place and give him some encouragement!
